About Ramsey AutoÂ
Ramsey Auto Center traces its history to 1946, when founders Gerry Sumner and J.D. Ramsey began selling and servicing Pontiac in downtown Des Moines. Located at 519 4th Street, Sumner Pontiac grew to eventually become one of the top-volume sales leaders in the US. As the decades passed, the dealership's name evolved to Sumner-Ramsey Pontiac and eventually to Ramsey Pontiac.
Over the years, Ramsey has had the BPG, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Porsche, Audi and Isetta car lines. Ramsey has sold Champion, Sprite and Twinkle Twilight Travel Trailers. In 1975, Ramsey acquired a Subaru franchise, and in 1989, a Mazda franchise. With previous used car locations on Hubbell Ave. and Downtown Des Moines near 7th St. and Grand Ave., the need for expansion precipitated the growing company to move to Urbandale.
Today, Ramsey Subaru and Ramsey Mazda are Iowa's #1 volume sales leaders for those brands. Ramsey Mazda is now part of Lithia Motors. Lithia is one of America's largest automotive retailers.
