The Perennially Popular Mazda CX-5 vs. Newcomer Mazda CX-50 - Which High-Quality SUV is Right for You?

It's no secret that drivers here in the Des Moines area appreciate a high-quality and fun-to-drive SUV when they see them. At Ramsey Mazda in Urbandale, we're proud to carry one of the most popular and sought-after SUVs around, the Mazda CX-5. Eye-catching and well-equipped, the CX-5 has been a longtime favorite for our customers. But now there's a new kid in town with a similar name and a similar design.

The new Mazda CX-50 sounds like the Mazda CX-5 and, in fact, it is a close relative, with seating for five people, four doors, and a spacious cargo hold in the rear. So how do you decide which of these similar Mazda options is right for you? You won't go wrong with either one, and our team is here to tell you more about each model and help you make the right decision.

Mazda CX-50 vs. Mazda CX-5

  • Off-road readiness. The Mazda CX-5 is renowned for its engaging performance, luxurious interior design, and cutting-edge features, it's at home on the main highways and byways around Des Moines. But with a higher ground clearance and some off-road performance tweaks, the Mazda CX-50 is at home on or off the beaten path. Both SUVs have standard all-wheel drive and either one is fine on bumps and dirt roads, but the Mazda CX-50 can handle steep inclines, declines, and more rugged terrain than the CX-5.
  • Performance. While the CX-50 performs better off road, both SUVs deliver the same, impressive level of power and output. In addition to standard all-wheel drive on both, they also each get their standard power from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with a turbocharged version of the same powerplant optional on upper trim levels.
  • Cargo space. There isn't much difference in the amount of cargo space offered by these two SUVs. Where the Mazda CX-5 has around 30.8 cubic feet of storage space behind the back row, the CX-50 can accommodate up to 31.4 cubic feet.
  • Interior space. Once again, there isn't a lot of difference between these two models when it comes to interior space for you and your passengers to stretch out in. However, from the exterior, the Mazda CX-5 is wider than the CX-50, but the CX-50 is longer than the CX-5. Inside, this translates to slightly more legroom, front and back, in the CX-50 than the CX-5, and more shoulder room in both rows with the CX-5 over the CX-50.

Depending on your lifestyle and the types of adventures you enjoy, one of these SUVs may be better suited for you than the other. Similar in so many ways, including identical power outputs and features rosters, they differ when it comes to a few key areas. If you're the type of Des Moines driver who prefers their adventures rugged and off the main road, the Mazda CX-50 may be better suited to your needs. But if you mostly commute on main roads and enjoy a luxurious, smooth ride over trail riding, the CX-5 may be right up your alley. Choosing your favorite comes down to what you like to do in your day-to-day adventures.
